Quixel Makes the Entire Megascans Library Free on Fab and Opens It to AI Training
Epic's Quixel is making the full Megascans library free on Fab and updating its license so developers can train AI models on the scans.
Epic Games' Quixel has made its entire Megascans library free on Fab, and it has updated the license terms so the scans can be used to train AI models. The move reverses the paid model Quixel introduced in 2025 and brings back free access to one of the most widely used photogrammetry libraries in game and film production.
What was announced
Quixel published the news on November 5, 2026. The company said it is "making the full Quixel Megascans library free on Fab," and that Fab listings will update over the coming days, with everything expected to be free by November 12. Assets that are still marked as paid will switch to free as their listings are updated, so developers waiting for a specific pack should check back.
The announcement also covers AI training. Quixel says it has "updated the terms for all Quixel assets," so Megascans and Megaplants can now be used to train AI models. The company frames this as a way to generate varied, photorealistic environments from real-world scans, though the precise permissions are set out in the updated license terms rather than in the announcement itself.
Customers who bought Megascans or a Quixel Bundle on or after January 1, 2025 will be refunded to their Epic Account Balance. Those buyers keep their existing license and gain the new AI rights. Studio license holders are told that their contracts still govern their terms.
Key details
- Publisher: Quixel, an Epic Games subsidiary
- Platform: Fab, Epic's digital asset marketplace
- Library: Megascans and Megaplants, described by outlets as more than 20,000 photogrammetry assets
- Free by: Fab listings update through November 12, 2026
- Refunds: Purchases made on or after January 1, 2025 are refunded to an Epic Account Balance, with refunds visible by the end of 2026
- Licensing: The new AI training rights apply to all Quixel assets, and studio licenses continue under contract terms
- Previous model: Free for Unreal Engine users after the 2019 acquisition, then moved to paid sales in 2025, according to Gamemeca
What is still unconfirmed
The announcement does not spell out every detail of the AI training terms, so developers should read the full updated license before building a pipeline around it. Outlets also differ on the library size, with some citing around 23,000 assets and others 20,000 or more. The exact count will depend on how many listings are live when the update finishes.
What it means for developers
- Free environment assets are back. A large scan library can cover rocks, bark, ground and ruins without a per-asset budget, which is useful for small teams.
- Check your old purchases. Anyone who bought Megascans after January 1, 2025 should look for the refund in their Epic Account Balance and confirm the new license is active.
- Read the AI clause before training. The updated terms allow model training on Megascans and Megaplants, but any internal pipeline should be checked against the license text rather than the headline.
- Plan for more scan-based content. A free library lowers the cost of photorealistic materials, which makes it easier to prototype a realistic look early in production.
- Watch the Epic ecosystem. The move fits a wider push toward AI tools in Unreal, alongside the planned Unreal Engine 6, so expect more asset and tooling changes from Epic.
