Frontier Developments' zoo simulator Planet Zoo 2 launches on October 13, 2026, and the studio is pitching it as its most advanced zoo game yet. The sequel brings aquatic and flying animals into the series for the first time, lets animals interact more with their surroundings, and pushes conservation work beyond the zoo gates. Pre-orders have already lifted the game high on Steam's sales charts.

What was announced

Frontier first detailed the sequel at the end of May, and its feature list centers on the animals. Aviaries and aquariums appear in the series for the first time, and new habitats let animals interact with their surroundings. Animation and animal behavior have also been upgraded. In its announcement, Frontier said "Planet Zoo 2 represents a generational leap forward in animation and animal behaviour." The statement did not name an individual.

Conservation is the other major theme. Players can work on restoring natural habitats and release animals into Wildlife Reserves, a larger goal that extends past the walls of the zoo itself. Frontier says the game has a deeper conservation focus overall.

The sales picture is already strong. According to Notebookcheck, citing Steam's top sellers chart at the time of writing, Planet Zoo 2 ranked second in Germany behind only the free-to-play MMORPG Aion 2, and seventh worldwide. That position was reached through pre-orders alone, before launch day.

What it means for developers

  • Pre-orders can build chart position before launch. Planet Zoo 2 reached seventh worldwide on Steam through pre-orders alone, which shows how much momentum a well-positioned store page can create before release day.
  • Pre-order bonuses work as a launch tool. Frontier bundles cosmetic extras with pre-orders and sells a Deluxe Edition with extra species. Indie teams can run the same pattern with small, low-cost content packs.
  • Behavior is a selling point. Frontier put animation and animal behavior at the top of its announcement. In simulation games, visible AI and animation quality can be the core pitch, not just a technical detail.
  • Theme can extend the core loop. Habitat restoration and wildlife releases give players goals beyond building and managing. Indie designers in management genres can use a similar purpose layer to deepen a loop.
  • Localize before launch. Shipping with 17 supported languages is a practical baseline for a game that expects a global audience, and it is easier to plan for at the start than to add later.
